The small Flensburg Fishing Museum on Fischerstrand tells the story of traditional fishing on the Flensburg Fjord. Run by the Flensburg Fishing Association of 1872, the museum is situated in the historic fishing harbour on the eastern side of the fjord.
Historical fishing gear, nets, tools and pictures provide an authentic insight into the lives and work of the fishermen. The exhibition recalls a time when fishing was a vital source of livelihood for many families and shaped everyday life around the Flensburg Fjord.
The museum illustrates how closely Flensburg, the harbour, the fjord and the Baltic Sea have been intertwined over generations. Today, it preserves a piece of regional history and brings the traditional craft of fishing to life for visitors.
The Fisheries Museum should not be confused with the Flensburg Maritime Museum. Whilst the latter focuses on the city’s extensive maritime history, the Fisheries Museum concentrates on local fishing and the lives of the fishermen.
A visit to Fischerstrand can be wonderfully combined with a stroll around the harbour and along the Flensburg Fjord – a small, authentic spot for anyone interested in fishing, the harbour and maritime history.
The Fisheries Museum is usually open Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm!
