Hygge, heartfelt Joy & Lights
This year, Flensburg's traditional Christmas market invites you to a very special winter experience from 21 November to 31 December 2022. As in previous years, warm lights and Nordic-style huts will adorn the heart of the city. A feeling of hygge spreads, as handicrafts and culinary delights line up in the neat huts between Süder- and Nordermarkt.
The festive opening of Flensburg's Christmas market will take place on Monday, 21 November at the Christmas pyramid in the idyllic setting of the Südermarkt. The Christmas pyramid in the middle of the square is the advent symbol of the Christmas market, where people meet for an extended chat in a cosy atmosphere. Political and society VIP ‘s will officially open the Christmas market at 5 p.m. at that time, the most popular and awaited guests - Father Christmas and his heavenly companions – will mingle with the crowd and delight the youngest visitors with little surprises. Together, everybody counts down until the tinsel cannon rains with golden fountains. By then, hopefully, even the last Christmas sourpuss will be in the festive mood.
The Scandinavian huts on the Südermarkt, including the "smallest bar in the world" with its famous Tallin punch, and the Witches' House invite visitors to enjoy a cosy Advent stroll. The "Christmas Hygge Mile" traditionally stretches from Südermarkt via Holm and Große Straße to Nordermarkt, and this year also through Schiffbrückstraße. Unfortunately, it has not yet been decided whether the Bundeswehr (German Army) troops will round off the varied offerings with their popular pea soup.
In addition to the hustle and bustle of the market, visitors young and old can look forward to other supporting programmes, such as surprise events, guided Christmas city tours, and much more. For example, every Sunday (27 November – 18 December 2022) from 3 p.m. onwards, there will be little surprise activities for children at the Nordermarkt. From bouncy castles to face painting, and Punch and Judy shows, there is something for everyone. Furthermore, the Wish Tree on Nordermarkt, which is popular with families, and the children's crunch house in front of Café Central, where people can make their own wish lists for Father Christmas, will also be available in their usual places.
A new programme item for children this year is a Christmas bake a cake in cooperation with the Meggers bakery: Here, children can bake and decorate delicious Christmas biscuits under expert guidance and take them home as a tasty souvenir, while in the meantime, parents may grab the opportunity to buy a couple of Christmas presents.
The Tourist Information office (Nikolaistraße 8) offers free shopping and luggage storage services during the Christmas market, as well as Santa's post office, where children can post self-made and hand-written letters with wishes and pictures to Father Christmas in the famous Christmas post box until 15 December. Every child is sure to get an answer! Among all the entries, one wish is guaranteed to be granted! There are no limits to creativity.
The weekly grocery market will take place during the Flensburg Christmas Market from 16 November to 27 December on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. around the Südermarkt, in Dr.-Todsen-Straße and on the Holm.
Dates subject to pandemic development and regulatory approvals.
